Five Reasons To Go Camping In The Vendée

If you are considering a camping holiday in France, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a destination. Where you choose to go will depend on your family's interests, but for beach lovers, a holiday spent camping in the Vendée is hard to beat. With a micro climate that gives it some of the hottest and sunniest weather in the country and a brilliant stretch of coastline that is filled with picture perfect beaches, it draws in millions of French and English holidaymakers each year. But there's more than jus
beaches for you to enjoy when you go camping in the Vendée - here are five reasons to pay a visit to the region this summer...

The Golden Coastline

The Vendée is one of the finest beach destinations in France, rivalled only by the Cote d'Azur. While the Cote d'Azur is loved by the jet set crowd, camping in the Vendée is perhaps the better choice for families. Famed for having over 2,500 hours of sunshine every year, the Vendée has a coastline to match the weather, with countless superb beaches. Camping in the Vendée is the perfect way to enjoy the coastline, with almost every campsite located close to an excellent beach.

The Inland Countryside

If you tire of the beaches, head inland - the Vendée is blessed with natural landscapes that complement its beaches. Don't miss out on Le Grand Parc Puy du Foy, an enormous national park that stages spectacular medieval re-enactments. The rest of inland Vendée consists of cool marshlands and shaded hills that provide a welcome respite from the heat of the coastline.

The Numerous Theme Parks

As befits such a popular destination for family camping, the Vendée has numerous theme parks, water parks, zoos, and other excellent entertainments within easy reach of the campsites. Highlights include the Aqualand water park near Gujan-Mestras, the Futuroscope theme park and the excellent Zoo des Sables d'Olonee. If you are camping in the Vendée with your family, you'll never be short of potential days out!

The Coastal Resorts

The coast, countryside and campsites are fine places to spend your time while camping in the Vendée, but it is likely that sooner or later you'll long for the bustle of a town or city. Fortunately, there are numerous characterful resort towns in the region that are ideal for day trips and family visits - La Rochelle in particular is well worth a visit, with its charming 17th century old town, a charming harbour, and an outstanding aquarium at the centre of the city.

The Other Nearby Regions

A stay at a Vendée campsite also puts you in perfect position to explore other nearby parts of France, on day trips or as part of a multi centre holiday. Head north into Brittany, and you can enjoy the distinctive Breton culture and famous regional cuisine (the seafood, cider and crepes are unmissable). Or if you want to sample the finest wines in France, head east to the Loire Valley - the chateaux, vineyards, and beautiful countryside along the banks of the Loire river are well worth visiting.
